PineCrest Celebrates 30th Anniversary

On Thursday, September 13, 1990, the artists’ rendering of the $10 million construction project was announced in Diboll's newspaper, The Free Press.

It was 1991. Texan George H.W. Bush was President, a gallon of gasoline cost $1.14 and retirement living in Lufkin was on the verge of being forever changed.

That same year, ground was broken on what would eventually become PineCrest, the area’s first faith-based, non-profit senior living community, who still holds that distinction today.

The old saying, “If these walls could talk…” is certainly an appropriate sentiment. Many lives have been impacted by the community over the years. The building has withstood an ice storm, been a safe haven to those evacuating hurricanes and stood strong during multiple tornados. The strength of the building over the years is a representation of the heart of the community.  Despite various ups and downs or challenges, PineCrest has always managed to represent a place of safety and strength to those in need. “We’ve obviously dealt with the pandemic recently, but no matter the challenges, our residents have always been our highest priority,” explained Heath Foust, Executive Director. “PineCrest is about providing a place where seniors can thrive during their retirement years and we’re proud to say we’ve never lost sight of that goal.”

Prior to PineCrest opening its doors, senior living options in the Lufkin area were much different. “We broke the mold in a lot of ways,” Foust said. “We’re still leading the way and we’re proud of that distinction.”

“We’ve got a lot to be thankful for,” Foust said. “Not only have we been serving area seniors for the past three decades, we’ve also been a great place of employment for countless people who’ve made a difference in the lives of older adults.”

From PineCrest’s beginning, the Temple Foundation (TLL) has played a large role in the community’s growth and success. The foundation was key in the expansion that included two dedicated memory support houses as well as sponsoring a multitude of residents who required financial support through MRC’s Resident Covenant Fund.
